The Ultimate Printing & Photo Guide for Louisville Families

Louisville families have no shortage of moments worth capturing — Derby season, summer days at Cherokee Park, holiday gatherings, first days of school, and the everyday magic in between. But capturing a moment is only half the story. Printing it, preserving it, and turning it into something you can hold — that's what makes a memory last. This guide covers everything Louisville families need to know about getting the most out of their photos, from printing options to preservation services, all in one place.

Photo Printing — Your Options Explained

Not all photo prints are created equal. The material you choose affects how the image looks, how long it lasts, and where it works best in your home.

Not sure which format is right for your image and your space? The guide to the art and science of print finishes walks through every material decision in plain terms — a useful read before your first order. According to DIY Photography, matching your print substrate to your image type is one of the most overlooked steps in getting a result you'll truly love.

Photo Books — Turning Moments Into Stories

A photo book does something a wall print can't: it tells a story in sequence. From a year-in-review album to a newborn's first twelve months, a well-designed photo book creates a narrative that families return to for generations. The Print Refinery Louisville East offers custom photo books in a range of sizes, paper types, and binding styles — from casual softcover albums to premium lay flat hardcovers.

• Year-in-review books — a curated record of the whole family's highlights, gifted at the holidays
• Newborn and first-year books — documenting milestones week by week before they're forgotten
• Travel and adventure books — bringing a trip back to life in a format you can share at the table
• Tribute and legacy books — honoring a family member, celebrating a milestone anniversary, or preserving a generation's story

Film Photography — Louisville's Growing Analog Community

Film photography has seen a genuine revival across Louisville, with more families and enthusiasts discovering the intentional, tactile experience of shooting on 35mm and medium format. For anyone curious about analog photography in Kentucky, The Print Refinery Louisville East offers everything in one place: film stocks for purchase, professional film developing and scanning, and printing services for the results. Photographers throughout the state — from Lexington and Owensboro to Elizabethtown and Ashland — can also mail in rolls for processing and receive scans back quickly.

Preserving the Past — Digitization and Restoration

Most Louisville families have analog media sitting in boxes — old prints, negatives, slides, and VHS tapes that haven't been seen in years. The Print Refinery Louisville East offers a complete range of preservation services:

• Photo scanning — high-resolution digitization of loose prints and photo albums
• Negative scanning — 35mm and medium format negatives and slides digitized at archival quality
• Photo restoration — faded, torn, or damaged prints repaired and restored digitally
• Video tape transfers — VHS and other tape formats converted to digital files before they become unplayable

For guidance on best practices for long-term digital storage after digitization, the Library of Congress Personal Digital Archiving resources are an excellent starting point.
